They're known as quiet, reasonable, reliable and silent people. So, what better than a scandinavian location for the film I watched two days ago?

"A Rational Solution", directed by Jorgen Bengmark tells an apparently simple story of an extramarital affair and the crazy attempt to find a "rational solution" to prevent the break of two couples.

Erland and May are happily married and looks like the perfect couple. So perfect that, in their spare time, hold courses about "how to keep alive a marriage" to local couples. Erland looks the typical trusty person we'd all like to meet. May, well, May doesn't communicates much empathy with viewers. Looks cold, distant and a hard-controlled-nervous person.

About Sven-Erik and Karin we don't know very much. Both being quite mysterious persons. Sven-Erik, silent and a bit weirdo coworker of Erland at the local paper-factory looks happy of what he has. Those persons that doesn't desire to get rich, or have a better job. He's deeply in love with his wife, and seems loved back.

Karin instead is a bit of an enigma. Silent and slightly underconfident, looks from the very beginning as lacking something from her life.

So, it happens, quite misteriously, that Erland and Karin fall in love with each other. Glancing at first. Staring for longer time then, and finally consuming a quick one in the back of his car. Everything without a word.

And love spreaded all around.

The problem comes early at the surface: Now what?
They both decide to front the troubles and sit with their partners, trying to find a rational solution of mutual living until the "passion" won't fade away.

In a display of pure Scandinavian rationality they say: me and her are in love and would like to live this moment together. So what if we all live in the same place so me and her (Erland and Karin) could have all the "fun" we need without deceiving you?

Both Sven-Erik and May reacts coldly, but agree in the end.

And I stop here.
By reading the plot it seems we're in front of a comedy. The elements are all in front of us. With a question: how they could have sex for real with their partners nearby?

Well, they do. Exceptionally well, judging by the noise they make.

May's behaviour follows a parabola-like trend. Cold at first, slowly changes to supportive, hopeful that "the quicker it begins, the quicker it ends", only to change back to cold right before the final act.

Sven-Erik eventually becomes more weird and erratic in his behaviour. Catatonic, silent, he starts behaving like a child, asking to sleep with the "new" couple. Creating unexpected tensions inbetween the "family".

Silence is a big deal in this movie. The silence between the Sven-Erik/Karin couple and the progressive lack of communication between Erland and May makes room for tensions, anger and desperation.

It comes clear that trying to find a "rational solution", even for rational people, looks far than possible. Love isn't an irrational thing after all?

I'd suggest you to watch this movie?

Hmm, don't you have another question?

Well, I had the feeling of it trying to explain something "untouchable" as love in a cold, mechanical way.
Just like trying to explain the miracle of birds' flying by decribing how tendons and muscles tense up the wings, helped by feathers. It doesn't mean it's not intriguing. And it surely doesn't mean that wasn't the director's goal.

As I said, it is far from a comedy movie, since the characters reacts as every normal person would do in front of such incredible events. Shouting, crying, standing still, arguing.

I think it deserves a watch.

Maybe after you took a look at Rosemary's Baby...

May invece appare fredda e collaborativa all'inizio, per poi diventare gelida e decisa alla fine.

Personalmente direi di no. E, a quanto pare, neanche i razionali e freddi svedesi paiono esserci riusciti. E' un film molto scandinavo in un certo senso. Primi piani, silenzi o poche parole. Lascia molto all'interpretazione.

#604 Champagne Molotov!
One, two, three, four, five, sex.

Ok, let's talk about sex then...

It involves my ex girlfriend but for only for one reason: having sex with foreign people or, anyway, someone who speaks a different language from yours.
If you think well about that, it doesn't come so easy and immediate to "communicate" both bodily and verbally if this last one is source of little thinking before. I think you got my meaning.

As I said, being my ex girlfriend not italian, with no knowledge of the language and me, being not chinese, with no knowledge of the chinese language, it was easy to find english as mutual language for our communications. But what about those moments?

Well, I confess everything was a bit strange at first, since, talking in another language involves a bit of acting (yes, as an actor) because mostly it's an imitation of another accent, expressions and even onomatopoeic sounds plus the often controlled use of words for exclamations or to show emotional involvement.
You know, those moments when happens something unexpected or when you shout at someone. And the words coming out from your mouth are pure instinct and emotions. I can't say that "oh my God" comes out from my mouth as when I say something similar in my language. I feel it more natural. And that's a comprensible reaction.
Much training, experience and a good amount of time immersed into another, alien, culture to evoke and show suche natural feel. I don't have that.

Same as for sex. You can't fake when love-talking with your significant other. Oh well, you can, but would be better if you wouldn't. Anyway, when you do it, it comes really harsh, at first, to mentally translate your emotions. With the result that your body is saying the truth. But your mouth sounds fake and facetious. Primarily to yourself.

This, as I said, happens expecially the first times together. Later, a bit of this, that, and some habit, can relax you and make you look and feel more natural. As you wanted.

With this I'm not saying that having sex with a foreign person is something more difficult or problematic than having with a compatriot but, if it happens, think about what you said (if, of course, you didn't in your language) and then consider how it sounded to you. Still amazed?

This can explain why some man mumbled another woman's name during some marital intercourse, revealing some dangerous extra-marital affair. But that's another issue.

This also explains why many people I know was curious to know about how's sex with a foreign person. I wasn't so open on explain and telling, though.

Curiosity killed the cat...

Curiosoni...

#603 Judice Condiderit Laudatus Caesare?
Let's talk about news!

Hmm, I really don't know how many of you might know about this case. I bet some heard about. The Perugia murder, happened almost two years ago, where a british student, Meredith Kercher was brutally murdered in her cottage, shared with another student, Amanda Knox, from Seattle.
Initially Knox, her boyfriend Gabriele Sollecito were investigated and later convincted for the murder. Knox, after some half-admission, cited Patrick Lumunba, owner of the pub where she worked, as the person who effectively killed her flatmate. Lumumba, married with childred, was arrested and then released for lack of evidences and a strong alibi.

The investigations then focused towards a third person, Rudy Guédé who disappeared right after the murder and would be eventually found in Germany, where he tried to escape.

Last year, Rudy Guédé, asking for "abbreviate rite" (hard times for me on translating this one) which is a form of shortened trial, was sentenced thirty years for his involvement in the murder.

Two days ago, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were sentenced by 26 and 25 years respectively.

Now. On the media the storm is still blowing like mad. For only one "small" reason. Amanda Knox's nationality.

A premise. I followed the investigations and trial as any other citizen did. Between a "could you pass me the wine?" and a "hold on, there's potatoes too".
Quite superficially and not enough informed to have an opinion about "right" or "wrong" in this case.

I just know that long before the trial many newspaper, in America, blamed Italian justice machine as slow, corrupted, malfunctioning and tricky. I'm totally sure of the first one and only a bit sure about the remainings.
Recently an american senator, democratic Maria Cantwell, if I'm not wrong, asked Hillary Clinton to do some investigation about the suspect of alleged "antiamericanism" within the Italian society.

Antiamericanism. That caused me a big laugh. Seriously.

Exactly WHERE the judges could be blamed of "antiamericanism"? Because they condemned an american citizen?
Does that mean that whenever an american person, or a french one, or german, or martian, comes here and "allegedly" (I told you I don't have an opinion about the murder) kills somebody, we can't trial him or we'll be called "antiamerican"?

Be serious.

Beside that, it gives room to two big contradictions. Well, one is just a half-contradiction.

The half-contradiction.
Less than a week ago Hillary Clinton, while dealing with a matter of backup troops in Afghanistan (troops that should come from Italy..) revealed that "Italy is an important ally for us". We all could guess how difficult could be, for a such important person like her to say "Italian society is highly antiamerican."

So, are we antiamerican or not?

Please Hillary, tell me, so I can save all my The Black Crowes' CDS from burning.

Italy could be antiamerican or proamerican as any other country in the world. Also, you can't expect of being loved by everyone.

The contradiction now.
Ok, Italian courts aren't the most exemplary about justice and punishments. This means that sometimes the guilty aren't adequately punished.

"He killed three persons, let's give him twenty years!"
"Hmm no, twenty are too much. Let's give him just six!"

Got the meaning?

About corruption. Well, I don't know. In this case the word "corruption" comes quite unexpected, since Kercher's parents (the only ones genuinely interested in seeking the truth) doesn't look SO wealthy.
And, even if they were, and tried to enstablish a "contact" with the court (something horrible), don't you think that Knox and Sollecito's parents could "join forces" on offering a higher amount?

I'm talking about something I really think doesn't happened but, could it sound realistic, right?

The main gossip tabloids here (and in the UK) did a very disgusting job, yet very elaborated, on describing this girl as a femme fatale, disguised under an innocent looking., forcing Sollecito, with the pure force of seduction, to kill Meredith. I think that, for sure the three persons involved (Sollecito, Knox and Guédé) are steadily tied each other. Tied in innocence or guiltyness, that's the question.

For sure, the court who condemned Amanda Knox for defamation could't be labelled as "antiamerican" since she "confessed" the involvement of a person (Lumumba) who was successively discovered as innocent. The crime of defamation in Italy is punished with prison. From two to six years.

Ironically enough it's the second time that an intereference with Italian matters from America comes when in the US a democratic president is on charge. The first time is the Cermis Tragedy, but that's another story.

Anyway, strange coincidence, uh?

And now let me tell you how's nice on re-discovering my skills on writing in italian....

A me personalmente Hillary Clinton sta anche simpatica.

Casi come questi scuotono l'opinione pubblica.

Proprio no.

Altra contraddizione.
Io mi chiedo "chi" avrebbe potuto corrompere i giudici?

Io mi chiudo in casa...

#602 Miss Perfection Has Hangovers Too

There's something strictly connected to antiracism that, I think, could be dangerous as the racist itself. Beside a discrimination feeling for strangers could exist a ultrafavouritism feeling for the same persons. I'll make myself clearer, but first make me introduce how I got this thinking. Some days ago I was driving at work when I saw a black woman stepping down from a bus. Suddenly, all the cars before me stopped in order to allow her to cross the road. Something she didn't want, since she told them she needed to stay on that side. Now, don't think this is a normal thing here. I don't mean the fact she was black and people did her a favour by stopping. I mean the stopping itself. Italians are not very “educated” in driving their cars (and I have to admit I'm part of this mass-bad-education) and when seeing somebody looking to cross the road well, honey, you can stay on that side for a couple of hours more. This, by the way, doesn't happen if who has to cross is exceptionally beautiful. Then you could hear noisy brakes sounds screaming like beasts.

Anyway, after that you can understand how strange was that thing.

It made me think if the growing racism in Italy could affect the antiracism in a form of extreme favouritism in favour of those who are victims of this terrible antisocial behaviour.

It all sounds like some kind of balancing. You “take 1€ from him? I'll give him 2€!”. Of course mine is just an example and it could be applied to every aspect of our society. Not only money. It's fine to me, since it's some kind of “refund” for those who lived through dire straits. But what about the others? What about who simply lived his life without any problem related to racism and discrimination? I'm sure there's people like that. Not all the italians are racists, luckily. Do this people needs an “advanced refund” for the discrimination (I hope they'll never suffer) they could undergo in the future? That's really not a good cure against racism. For at least two reasons. This would make people angrier with them, raising the racist alarm all around and could turn some smart one into a “lottery winner”. If you know what I mean.

I think my conceiving of antiracism is pretty simple. Treating others as they were the same of ours. Not favouring them (that, as I said, would create a new generation of angry 'racist' italians), since everybody should have the same chance to improve their lives.

For this reason I consider this a “bad” antiracism. Since it turns into racism towards italians! And please don't come and tell me “italians' lives are much easier than theirs”.Of course, we can't really compare the two things. But I can compare it with the mass immigration in the '60 and '70 moved lots of people from the south to the north of the country. There was hatred between southerns and northerns. And believe me, that was racism too. My mother had to swallow lots of mud. From the people who labelled southerns as “lazy” to her colleague who shouted all day long she would made “soap” of them. Kinda reminds me “arbeit mach frei” uh? But she and others had the same opportunities people born here had. And this didn't stop my parents from raising us, sending us to school and making us "good persons". That' s how southerns are supposed to be lazy?

After years and years many people integrated into the society and considers it their home. That's what going to happen with foreigners. Racism can't really last. Just by giving them the same opportunities we have. Not by breaking the equilibrium and favouring a hypocrite approach.

Ovvio no?

#601 Speaking The Truth Is An Act Of Love
I find myself every year, right in the middle of Christmas time, needing some stuff from stores and those places who resembles more the hell than a shop. And today I didn't miss the chance.

Even on the streets everything was hinting that it might have been a better idea to stay at home and watch the match (Barbarians Vs New Zealand) on TV.
Instead, after days and days of my father's continuous requests, I decided to do some printing and, for his hedonistic pleasure I developed him the pictures some photographer took of him at the NYC marathon.

Then I'll have to print his partial timing, and then the final time, then "how could we cast my name and time on the medal?", and then something else because you all have to know, runners are sissies. Being like "oh, what about these shoes?" "what about his times?" "and what about my timing at km 15?

They like to look for themselves at the mirror, in other words.

So, the prints came out pretty good, both mine and the ones the unknown photographer took. Anyway, every time I go to that lab there's something crazy going on. Today, especially for kids lovers, there were a couple of women holding two toddlers. Noisy you say?

Well, let's put like that. In 2000 I attended Placebo's concert in Milan, and I was right beside the P.A. speakers.

Brian Molko's guitar was less noisy...

In the meantime two other kids. Old enough to walk and run away from their mothers were jumping on chairs, touching whatever they could and finally, lacking some other interesting activity, started a muay thai fight.

I was choosing my pictures at the pc when I heard "ouch!" and a noise similar to a bag full of potatoes falling on the floor. Then, we discovered that the blue boy kicked in the stomach his brother, the red one. Leaving him K.O.

And the two toddlers raised the volume...

Anyway. As usual, I'm not about to buy any gift as well receiving any. So I'm relatively fine and not running, sweating and worry in search of some good idea but, at the same time, I feel lesser and lesser comfortable in these crowded places. Cameras, computers, games, DVDs and all of this, and I don't need anything and I'm NOT interested in anything. I'd like that a heavy snowing comes and makes all the streets impossible to drive through. Then people will walk and a big quiet makes looking decent Christmas for once...

And now I'm off to watch Juventus trying to castrate FC Inter's dignity....

[re-watching my yesterday video I noticed some text comes and goes way to quick. I apologize for that. I'll post a new version when it comes its time. So see you at 1200th post! ]

#600 Senza Di Teeeeee, Resta Solo Un Pezzo Di Meeeee
Better you turn on your speakers...

[RE EDITED]

#599 Il Denaro Non Parla. As everybody else, but not that kind of missing that causes you inertia and deadly lazyness. It's like a bad taste in mouth. Or some itch you can't simply stop by scratching.
It didn't take a short time to localize where the disease really is. Not the missing itself, of course, it's a normal thing to miss people, but I realized in time that this is just a small part of the major disease. Often coming as some kind of "attachment" to something else. Some turn at work, some family issue or some social activity I can't or don't want to, attend.

Some time I had some hard time at work. When my boss was obsessing me with his presence and his requests. When, you know, wherever I turned my head I can see just closed doors and no way to get out. Then, a slightly annoying feeling of missing someone came as the ice on the cake. And that's really annoying. Since my skill on managing missings gets compromised and falls in ruins.

Aw.

#598 The Winter Sea Is Like A Black And White Movie
Yesterday my boss arrived saying "your friend Marcella is waiting for you in her office". Of course "friend" is an euphemism, since she's the head of personnel (and a very nice girl too). So, she wanted to see me again for the facts I talked about some week ago and give me a letter saying the issue is closed and on my December's wage I would be "enlighten" of three paid hours. Actually as soon as I got in the office she asked me "I heard you went to NY and ran the marathon" but I was a bit curious and worried about the reason I was called there and didn't pay too much attention on telling my trip and to look too enthusiast about.

Yesterday, on my italian post I mumbled about a possible "metaphysical" (allow me the term) explanation of some recent fact happened at my workplace.
Fact that caused some "conversation" both among colleagues and between the bosses and the other workers. Stupid things, not really important and not really at the "level" of those who pointed them out. Or maybe the level is the same, who knows.

A stupid thing as a coffee break could turn into a big issue and point out the focus on other important things just like production or programming of this production.

I don't want to reapeat things I already discussed before. In short, the new boss hardly tolerates gatherings of workers (I mean, blue collar workers) at some "hot" hour such as 6 a.m. Beside, at 8, at the same place, you could have hard time in even finding the coffee machine. So much people is there. And they're white collars or simple "paper-men".
Now, why these bosses doesn't complain about them?

A colleague asked the same thing and, I know that the "us and them" explanation not always is enough.

In this case it comes on help something I read some years ago. Does some of you ever read "The Art of War" by the chinese general Sun Tzu?
Well, on the premise there's an introduction to the Tao philosophy as well for its "components" Yin and Yang.
Tao is "the harmony". This is necessary to keep everything on its "equilibrium".
Tao, at the same time, is a combination between two things, Yin and Yang.
Yang is everything positive, masculine, solar, bright, evident, outspoken. On the opposite Yin is feminine, lunar, dark, nightly and negative. One without the other could cause a break on this equilibrium. So no equilibrium, no Tao. Simple, uh?

Now, our job is mostly Yang. It's evident and light. If my boss comes at my place can easily check if I fooled around or worked all the afternoon. He just needs a glimpse to know the truth.
What about a white collar (big, undefinite group of people who doesn't do anything manual in their job) walking up and down the corridor with an unknow sheet of paper in his hands?
Well, everybody could think he's working and delivering some important paper to some important people. Most of the time this is true.
True and Yin. Since is something "dark" and mysterious at most of the people's eyes. Got my point?

Now, this is something necessary for the "harmony".

Considering that the production is something Yang, as a bunch of papers is Yin. A boss would rather see something Yang, evident and physical as some crate full of helicopter parts than a bunch of solved issues with a supplier.

The same it can be applied at something silly as a coffee break. The production can't wait, while an issue, a project, a delivery order or a sudoku can.

That's my personal workplace Tao.

And I can't see any harmony in that....

#597 Haille Does Hebron

Capite perchè certa gente arriva a quei livelli? E chi ci avrebbe pensato di noi? Nessuno.

No, non direi.

Facile no?

#596 Fuori! Grida l’Uomo Nero
Switzerland made the news!
Our close neighbours' popular poll about a ban over construction of new minarets headed many of our newspapers and latest news on tv too.

Who doesn't know that must think: what happened then?

Well, it's quite simple.
After four minarets built beside some big mosques like in Zurich, Winthertur, Geneva and Wangen bei Olten some other mosque in the country planned the construction of its minaret, finding the opposition of the far right movements (but not only them) combined with the general fear of an islamic invasion. They held a poll and the 57% of Swiss citizens agreed with the ban. So, no new minarets in Switzerland in the next years.

Now, what's a minaret?
A minaret is the tower (in fact that means "the lighthouse") beside a mosque where the muezzin (the "call" for a prayer) is spreaded five times per day.
Comparable with the bell tower of a church.

A little disgress.
Living beside a bell tower is not so disturbing, honestly. Maybe because the priest here doesn't rang it without control, just to produce some noise. It just rings every thirty minutes (ringing once) with the exceptions of Sunday's functions, funerals and other ceremonies.

Honestly I never seen a minaret in its functions and I'd really like to see it. To see if is that disturbing, to see if "rings" all the time and just to take a look at.
They said "a minaret is in sharp contrast with the background and violates the laws against the "unmatching buildings with their surroundings"".
I think this because the mosques are not those typical buildings we see in tourist guides. You know, the big building, very detailed, elegant and stunning. In example here mosques are abandoned buildings "given" to islamic religion pratictioners. Just like "here you have monkey. This is your new church". De facto diminishing their "freedom of religion".

Another position the pro-ban associations promoted is not regarding the "architectural" issues, but those social-politician ones. Arguing that "no minarets are named in the Qur'an or other holy scriptures" and hinting that a tower like that is a symbol of religious-political claim. In other words, "here's the islamic law, not yours".

Honestly I can understand their fears. One of Europe hiddenmost fears and source of concern is the Arabian "invasion". Not the terrorism, not illness, not the atomic bombs.
A peaceful and silent invasion that, in a few years, will substitute our culture with their, letting us feeling as guests in our own place.
In history, the most effective "weapon" of conquest wasn't a cannoon, or a bomb, or a F14, but the anagraphic. Settling new families, bringing parents and relatives along with people immigrating here and a slight reluctancy on integration.

Is this last one always true?

Oh no, of course not!
Yesterday I went to see the arrival of a local running competition. And there were many maroccan helping setting up the place, running and behaving as villagers. Being, matter of fact, more tied to the village than ME, born here.

Beside all that, I think that those who were anti-ban had some interesting point of view but explained it not very strongly. One of them is the freedom of religion.

I know, they maybe don't trust far-right purposes and think that, after attacking the building of minarets, they will attack the exsistence of moques and then the practice of islamic cult. Three way too easy steps to do mentally and somehow easier to do on practice if the population is adequately prepared. This by insisting on the "islamization fear" and other issues like that. Something we have here too. A famous writer wrote a book about her experience in the arabic world while working as correspondent for importan newspapers. And her experience turned from bad to terrible, with the result of a book full of hate, riot and general anti-islamism. Her suggestions about how to react weren't very effective, though. She referred to general riots and opposition to arabians. No good ideas, just general violence.

That's why she moved to New York maybe.

When I was in Singapore I remained really surprised by the mixing of cultures and the presence of churches, mosques, indian temples and every kind of religious building in the surroundings. But, maybe due to Singapore's relatively young age this was possible without a cultural shock.

Here the road is still long to walk...
