I'm currently on detoxing from band's songs and I feel much better. Actually I'm playing Beatles' songs all the time, with inserts from disco '70 music, funk and jazz. Strange enough. I don't like to listen the music I like to play and vice versa. Ok, I like to listen some Jamiroquai songs as well as Earth Wind & Fire or Stevie Wonder, but my heart beats for Neurosis, Hüsker Dü, The Cure, CCCP, Impaled Nazarene, Motorhead, Carcass...and many many more. I love those bands, but I don't like to play their music that much (except for Motorhead and CCCP) as I like to listen to.
Detoxing then. I completely stopped practicing our songs in order to start "having fun" again with bass. Not that I don't have fun when playing with the band. I have MUCH fun, but I felt somehow obsessed with playing well and make my sound fitting good with the general band's sound that I completely give up studying or simply fooling around with music. During the week we exchanged several mails about the gig and about some new song. Guitarist suggested a new song from Italian band Lacuna Coil (I think is quite known in US too) but I don't like that very much. Both song and band. Not my kind, really. Someone said "oh, how come? They're Italian! you should support them!" since not many Italian bands reached the mainstream. They played several times at Ozzfest and major European Festivals. I respect them, especially after their very first tour, when drummer and both the guitarists left the band. They didn't missed the chance and hired a guitarist and a drummer DURING the tour in order to go on with their adventure. And these musicians are still with the band. I respect them. But don't tell me to be a fan of their music. I like something different.
So, Valerio, the guitarist, came up with playing their Spellbound and he didn't get some good vibe from us. The singer immediately said "well, nice song, but pretty standard". Actually I took a look at the video and I started shivering. They use a 5 strings bass. I am a 4 strings player. Aw hail no way me to buy a 5 strings bass. Call me close minded. Call me limited. Call me conservative. What I can say in my humble defence is the fact the all the bassplayers I respect used a 4 strings bass. So I'm doing like that. I'm attracted by 6 strings bass, since I like having a higher set of notes. But I really don't know what to do with those 5 deep notes more. Luckily, nobody looked excited by this song. You judge. I don't like very much the bass part. Playing just on some few low notes doesn't fit my style. Too nu-metal for me.
Beside there's a question I would like guitarist will answer: where the hell are the keyboards? I think that the keyboardist, Andrea, caught some scent of burnt and quickly suggested three songs from a heavily keys&guitar driven finnish band called Sonata Arctica. You know, those bands screaming castrato-like with crazy instrumental battles such as "keys does "peepeepereeepeee" and guitar replies "peeeppeeereerreepreee!"". I expected some song quite far from my style but I was wrong, since those songs are COMPLETELY out of my style! The titles explains it all: Full Moon, Black Sheep and Don't Say A Word. I didn't find the last one, while Black Sheep sounds quite mean to me. Beside Full Moon is not that bad and I'm about halfaway on learning it. Bass parts are usually deadly boring and hyperfast on this musical style. I just have to train up on speed...
In piena disintossicazione da musica. Anzi no. Dalla musica che ho suonato fino ad oggi, che è praticamente quella del gruppo. Non che non mi piaccia, anzi. E' molto divertente suonare in gruppo e non c'è bisogno che mi metta a rinfrescare la memoria di tutti circa le sensazioni che ho provato sabato scorso. E' anche vero però che suonando ed esercitandosi sempre sulle stesse canzoni si rischia di non divertirsi più. E il basso è per prima cosa divertimento per me. Poi viene il resto.
Quindi ho ripreso le canzoni di cui avevo così bruscamente interrotto lo studio per una full immersion nella scaletta della data e ho cercato di riscoprire il primodiale divertimento dietro il mio strumento preferito. Perciò largo a Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder, I Beatles, e qualcosa dei Red Hot Chili Peppers. Per carità, nessuno che ascolterei normalmente (a parte i Beatles e Wonder), in quanto sono un grande amante del Black Metal, l'Hardcore Punk, lo Sludge e tanto il resto lo sapete. Notavo infatti che, per uno strano scherzo del destino, la musica che amo suonare non è quella che amo ascoltare. E viceversa. A parte qualche eccezione ovviamente. I Neurosis, i Turbonegro o i Motorhead c'andrei di CORSA a suonarli. Immortal, Darkthrone o anche Hüsker Dü (peraltro grandissimo gruppo questo) no. Mi dispiace, ma non ce la faccio. Adoro la loro musica e l'ascolto spesso. Ma non la suonerei. Viceversa, gli Earth, Wind & Fire si. Il basso non si limita ad un mero accompagnamento ma colora la canzone e si insinua nella testa e nelle gambe come una pallottola. Questo è il basso che mi piace.
Ma non è proprio il momento di una gratuita, non richiesta e, soprattutto, indecente, lezione sull'economia del basso in una canzone. Nel frattempo sono arrivate delle mail, in settimana, sulla performance di sabato e i vari componenti del gruppo hanno riferito i pareri dei propri amici accorsi. Pareri più che positivi, in generale.
Non so veramente quando ci si troverà per suonare, visto che anche l'anno scorso è passata tutta l'estate e anche settembre prima che ci trovassimo. Chissà, questa volta passerà meno tempo. Credo che la data appena passata abbia gasato non solo la mia di testa. Le mail, oltre a parlare di pareri e di una possibile serata non suonante ma festeggiante, suggerivano (chitarrista) dei pezzi nuovi che potremmo provare. La prima, del chitarrista, proponeva Spellbound dei Lacuna Coil. Ho visto il video ed ho notato due cose. La prima: ho visto con orrore che il bassista ha un 5 corde. Io non ho un basso a 5 corde e spero di non possederlo mai. Un 6 corde si, vista la varietà tonale. Un 5 corde no. Di quelle 5 note in più non so che farmene. Davvero. Fatto sta che i Lacuna Coil lo usano in questa canzone. Canzone che, cosa numero due, non è che sia particolarmente esaltante. La cantante l'ha detta giusta nella sua risposta "è una canzone che non si distacca dal loro stile". Non memorabile e orecchiabile, direi io. Chissà. Forse verrà scartata. Soprattutto, dove sono le tastiere? Io non le sento. Un problema in più.
A poca distanza da questa mail ecco che arriva una controproposta del tastierista. Tre, dico, tre canzoni dei Sonata Arctica, gruppo power metal finlandese. Full Moon, Black Sheep e Don't Say A Word. Non ho recuperato la terza. La seconda non mi dice molto. La prima invece è carina. Ha un bel ritornello, anche se la parte di basso è la classica cavalcata metal tutta Steve Harris e tendinite. Io, per mettermi le chiappe al sicuro, l'ho già mezza imparata. Resta solo da lavorare sulla velocità.

@BranmacFeabhail - yeah, especially where she sings "I'm spellboud" (or something like that) that's a very common compositive path they follow...in example there's a very beautiful song on their first album, Reverie, called Circle..I'd like to perform that..I think that their compositive skills really dropped down thought the years and now just compose music that most of the people like. Successful, but far from being creative..

@BranmacFeabhail - yeah, especially where she sings "I'm spellboud" (or something like that) that's a very common compositive path they follow...in example there's a very beautiful song on their first album, Reverie, called Circle..I'd like to perform that..I think that their compositive skills really dropped down thought the years and now just compose music that most of the people like. Successful, but far from being creative..
